Oral stereognosis (form or shape recognition in the oral cavity) can be utilized to assess oral perceptual abilities. This assessment can be beneficial in planning as well as predicting the future outcome of any treatment modality in the oral cavity.

develop in childhood and decrease with age. A positive correlation also exists between 
OSA and masticatory efficiency. Moreover, OSA appears to be decreased in stroke 
patients but not in Parkinson's disease patients, and it may reflect swallowing function in 
the oral phase in post-stroke patients with dysphagia."
